Community Patio
Huerta and community courtyard design | 2025–2026
The project begins with the Valencian Huerta, understood as both a landscape and a cultural structure. Its irregular plots, irrigation channels, and different states of cultivation become the basis for the organization of the patio.
The ground is divided into “plots” that alternate soft soil and vegetation with harder but permeable surfaces. These pieces create rhythm, guide the view, and transform the patio into a small living fragment of Huerta within the city.
The patio is conceived as a space for community: a place for meetings, workshops, debates, and celebrations, where social relationships can grow and the idea of neighbourhood is reinforced.
A suspended roof made of ropes becomes the main gesture of the project. Each rope represents the spirit of a neighbour and, together, they form a shared mantle that protects and transforms the space. Individually they are fragile, but collectively they create a strong structure.
The geometry of the project comes from a simplified grid inspired by the agricultural plots of Valencia. This grid defines both the ground level and the upper rope system, generating irregular shapes, seating areas, vegetation zones, and points of tension.
At certain moments, the roof descends and anchors to the ground. Where this happens, the hard surface opens and soil appears, connecting the community with the land, its origin, and its product.
In this way, Huerta and community support one another, creating a patio based on identity, belonging, and collective life.
