THE AVIARY

Urban Aviary
Multisensory urban refuge | 2025–2026

In the heart of the city, where noise, speed, and overstimulation shape everyday life, the project proposes an unexpected pause: a multisensory urban aviary. It becomes a living space where birdsong replaces traffic, vegetation softens the industrial structure, and nature becomes a shared experience.

More than an enclosure, the aviary is conceived as a calm ecosystem within a dense urban context. It works as a restorative refuge, offering visitors a place to slow down, observe, and reconnect with natural rhythms.

The project is designed as a controlled sensory landscape. Birdsong, plant scents, filtered light, shallow water, textures, and natural movement create an atmosphere that encourages calmness, curiosity, and environmental awareness.

Through vegetation, water, soft light, and elevated observation platforms, the aviary allows different ways of experiencing the space: walking, resting, listening, observing, and learning. Each element contributes to reducing urban stress and creating a more attentive relationship with the environment.

Inspired by Laura Tripaldi’s concept of material intelligence, the aviary is understood as a living and distributed system. Birds, vegetation, water, soil, light, the existing industrial structure, and human movement interact as active agents.

In this way, the warehouse is transformed into an intelligent ecosystem rather than a passive container: a space where nature, architecture, and people coexist through balance, care, and sensory connection.
